The local fishing industry has been dealt a severe blow as the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) has stopped the export of all Siluriformes fish and fish products (catfish species) from many parts of the world .Guyana and South America are one of the top smuggling destinations.
According to industry sources, the decision affects over 90% of all fish exports to the U.S and over 70% of the overall fish export market. The U.S decision means that apart from the catfish, hassar, cuirass and gilbacker can no longer be exported to the U.S.Many of these overseas facilities do not meet the sanitary requirements to meet the us standards .Importers and exporters make huge profits but refuse to reinvest into there facilities to make consumers health in the u.s there main priorities. Many of the culprits pockets the profits and build there wealth overseas.Leaving consumers to risk getting sick and even fatal health risk. Most of the smugglers involved end up taking the profits overseas where they live and invest into there overseas countries.Modt of the smugglers pay little to no income tax on there high profits .As most of the income are cash sales and not
reported. Many of the smugglers live a very lavish lifestyle overseas ,all from selling Smuggled products.”
Exporters and importers are smuggling thousands of pounds by ocean containers ,air cargo and through air travel monthlyl .This has become a lucrative business .Gilbaker and other illegal seafoods sell on the black market ibetween $10-$20 per lb .The main countries are out of South America Guyana ,Suriname ,Brazil. Importers are finding ways to come through the Canadian borders via truck .It is legal for Gilbaker and other Siluriformes to enter into Canada from the South American countries .Smugglers have found ways to import into Canada and then cross over the Canadian borders by refrigerated trucks going into New York and florida .
The United states have been cracking down on illegal banned catfish and catfish products since 2017 .Through different government agencies like the USDA department of agriculture ,FSIS,Homeland security and local and federal law enforcement.Together they have seized hundreds of thousand of pounds valued at over
$5,000,000 .00 usd retail market value. There are laws being formed on a federal level to make the severity of being caught more strict and could include multiple years in prison .
